Menorca, a Starlight reserve

A Starlight Reserve is a protected natural area where a commitment to protecting the quality of the night sky and access to starlight is established. Its main function is to preserve the quality of the night sky and the different associated values, whether cultural, scientific, astronomical or the natural landscape.

Starlight tourist destinations are locations with ideal conditions for observing the stars and where light pollution is controlled, making them ideal destinations for tourism based on the appreciation of the sky as part of the natural world.

Many of us are certified Starlight monitors, and we can guide you around the incredible nightscape that glitters above our heads.

Watching the sky in Menorca

Menorca is far from big cities and a good part of its territory is protected, so there are places with very little light pollution. On a clear, moonless night you can see far more stars than in a city, and often the Milky Way.

Tips for a good night of stargazing

  • Pick clear nights and, if you can, a new moon or a thin moon.
  • Move away from street lamps and house lights.
  • Wait about twenty minutes for your eyes to adapt to the dark and avoid looking at your phone; if you need light, use a red torch.
  • Wrap up: even in summer it gets cool at night.
  • A star-map app or a pair of binoculars will help you recognise constellations and planets.

With a Starlight monitor

Many of our guides are certified as Starlight monitors. They can take you to the best places, explain the sky and combine the observation with the island’s night-time landscape. If you are interested, ask us for a walk or a tailor-made visit through the contact form.
